چکیده

Previous work (Bompas & O’Regan, 2006a, 2006b) revealed that color perception is subject to sensorimotor adaptation, i.e. to a perceptual adaptation whose effects depend on actions. In these experiments we had shown that the introduction of new sensorimotor contingencies between eye movements and color changes resulted in a consistent perceptual bias affecting color comparison judgements made across an eye saccade. In the present article, we study the dependency of this effect on two properties of the eye saccade: amplitude and direction. As saccade direction in the test stage increasingly deviates from the horizontal rightwards saccade performed during adaptation, the perceptual shift decreases. The effect is still present for pi/8 but disappears for larger differences (pi/4 to pi/2). On the other hand, the perceptual bias proves very robust to changes in the amplitude of the saccade performed during the test stage: the effect is still measurable for saccades four times smaller or twice larger than during adaptation, and no clear dependency of the amplitude of the effect on the amplitude of the eye saccade was obtained. This difference in transfer properties could indicate that the effect involves the initiation stage of the eye saccade, which would confirm that the perceptual effect results from the up-dating of a prediction function linking eye saccades and color changes.

Behavioral evidence of separate adaptation mechanisms controlling saccade amplitude lengthening and shortening.

The accuracy of saccadic eye movements is maintained over the long term by adaptation mechanisms that decrease or increase saccade amplitude. It is still unknown whether these opposite adaptive changes rely on common mechanisms. Here, a double-step target paradigm was used to adaptively decrease (backward second target step) or increase (forward step) the amplitude of reactive saccades in one d...

Structure and arrangement of photoreceptors in the retina of big eye kilka, Clupeonella grimmi (Kessler 1877)

The big eye kilka, Clupeonella grimmi, is a marine fish living in depth of 20 to 200 meter of the Caspian Sea. Its eye and retina were processed for histological and SEM studies. Paraffin embedded retina was cut radially and tangentially in 5 ?m thickness and stained with hematoxylin and eosin method. The unstained sections were manipulated for SEM image observations. Tangential retinal sect...

A Comparative and Contrastive Study on the Meaning Extension of Color Terms in Persian and English

We deal with a wide range of colors in our daily life. They are such ubiquitous phenomena that is hard and next to impossible to imagine even a single entity (be it an object, place, living creature, etc) devoid of them. They are like death and tax which nobody can dispense with. This omnipresence of colors around us has also made its way through abstract and less tangible entities via the inte...

More evidence for sensorimotor adaptation in color perception.

Sensorimotor adaptation can be defined as a perceptual adaptation whose effects depend on the occurrence and nature of the performed motor actions. Examples of sensorimotor adaptation can be found in the literature on prisms concerning several space-related attributes like orientation, curvature, and size. In this article, we show that sensorimotor adaptation can be obtained for color, as a con...

Eye position effects in saccadic adaptation.

Saccades are used by the visual system to explore visual space with the high accuracy of the fovea. The visual error after the saccade is used to adapt the control of subsequent eye movements of the same amplitude and direction in order to keep saccades accurate. Saccadic adaptation is thus specific to saccade amplitude and direction. In the present study we show that saccadic adaptation is als...
